All these artists have a connection with the Fine Art Department of Buckinghamshire Chilterns University College (BCUC) in High Wycombe, as staff, graduates or students. The fifteen artists have not exhibited as a group together before, but have been chosen by the curator for their work. In particular, she has chosen work that is surprising.

Surprise is very close to pleasure, and as Robert Hughes says in his introduction to The Shock of The New, 'Pleasure is the root of all critical appreciation of art'. Bridget Riley also commented in 1984 that 'the pleasures of sight have one characteristic in common - they take you by surprise'. The work is surprising in many different ways - use of unusual materials, including cardigans, sweetboxes, light, sound and ice; unconventional support shapes and colours in paintings; sculpture that is kinetic or interactive; and everyday objects that are transformed into something unexpected.
