For some time I have been thinking a lot about things we can't see or feel - things that are therefore difficult to understand, like the earth being round, or space stretching out for ever and ever. We are told convincing stories about these things and so we believe them, even though we cannot prove them by seeing.

The title for my piece of work in this exhibition is In space no one can hear you scream. This is a fact that I have read, but I have no way of being able to prove it. In this piece there is an electric motor connected to a pebble by a length of cotton. It appears that the motor is pulling the pebble up the slope. I could tell you that it takes eight hours to pull the pebble from the bottom end to the top. But do you really know if the pebble is moving?

SURPRISE is being given the unexpected. The real surprise in this piece of work is hearing the pebble scream.
